Did all the usual storage prep last Fall.....storage seal, ran it dry.
Changed the impeller over the Winter and re-did the shift/throttle cables.
This Spring, fresh 50:1 fuel, new sparkplugs.
Starts right up, idles beautifully, shifts like greased lightning.

But, does it smoke!
I haven't been able to let it get really warmed up...the smoke gets so thick in the garage that I have to shut it off.
The plugs are slightly wet.

What is going on? Do I need to take it out on the water?
I haven't changed any carburetor settings since last season.

Well, it was right there in the Factory Service Manual.
Excessive smoke at idle is a problem with the check ball not seating in the primer.
So, I ordered a primer service kit and replaced all the parts.
I had to take a few deep breaths before starting it up after putting it all back together.
It now smokes like I would expect a 2-stroke engine to do.

For good measure, I replaced the fuel line from the filter to the carburetor.
END-OF-PROBLEM!

That's very good information, I have a 2000 9.9 that does the same thing. Never paid much attention to it but i do now. Just an FYI for anyone looking for an accelerator pump diaphragm for a 4 cylinder 100-125 hp that Mercury says is NLA, the diaphragm from this kit works perfectly. I had one go bad, recognized it from a carb kit for a 9.9 and installed it and worked perfectly to this day.
