1998 250 hp johnson ignition problem

1998 250 hp Johnson two stroke .Ive got a 250 Johnson and it will only run if you hold the starter in , the moment you let the starter go she dies .Ive tried bypassing the neutral switch , have voltage on Purple when key is on , what else could I look for ?

Look for a black / yellow stripe wire coming from the powerpack ( ignition module ) on top of the motor.-----Pull the conecter apart.-------See if motor will now keep running.----------Note the motor can then not be shut off with the key , needs to push key in to stop it by flooding it.

thanks for the reply , if the motor keeps running does that mean a faulty powerpack ?

No , it means that there is something wrong in the wiring from that connecter to your control box / ignition key.

Gotcha , I did try swopping the Ign switches over with the stb engine and no difference . The Ign switches/kill switch are about a month old
