1996 Evinrude 150 shuts off

My first post so I hope I get it right. Fishing Saturday while making a 6 mile run the motor just shut off. I tried to restart and it would not fire. I didn't have a spark tester with me but another boat threw me a can of starting fluid and when I would give it a shot of that, still nothing. I put it back together and started on the trolling motor figuring I blew the coil packs but I tried it about an hour later and it started but only ran for about 30 seconds. I tried again about an hour later and it started and ran for about 40 seconds and died. The next morning, I hooked the hose to it and it fired up and i let it run for a couple minutes and it seemed fine. I took the cover off the coils and cleaned the connections. Is there anything you can think to point me in the right direction? Thank you

Not the coils, either stator,eye or pack. Is it overcharging as this will cause stator to overheat and shut down.

Thank you, I will put a meter on it and see what the voltage is.
