1993 evirude 6hp

have 93 6hp evinrude manual long shaft- trying to drop lower unit from crankcase to work on waterpump - have taken both phillops screws out and long thru bold - but will not drop down - am i missing something that may have to be released on the shifting linkage- it has no inspection plate like the old ones that you loosened from the coupling - any help please
