1989 evinrude 150hp shift rod connector

Can someone please tell me if it’s possible to disconnect the shift rod on a 1989 150hp outboard..I’ve tried but it seems impossible…there has to be something I’m missing

The connecter is somewhat hidden; between intake manifold and lower carburetor.----!/4" drive with extension.and 3/8" socket.----For a novice it might be easier to remove lower carburetor.----Do not turn shift rod when lower unit is off.
