1989 9.9 merc how to remove tiller handle

I need to remove the tiller handle as it is wobbly. I need to replace the washers and bushings. Will it release after I remove the cables that are on the wheel?

Try tightening the big nut on it first it tends to loosen up after a while

Thanks for the info. I tried that but I couldn't even move the throttle after I did that.

Take the nut off and put blue loctite on the threads and snug the nut up you can't just crank it down with the loctite you can snug it up and take the play out of the tiller
