1979 omc stern drive lower unit

Has anyone ever rebuilt one of these units? I lost forward drive. Found bad wire coating on both coils. Going to replace both with new parts but I'm wondering if I should be checking anything else while I'm in here? Clutch packs maybe? Any help much appreciated. Bill
