1976 pilot controls gears skip 115hp

i have a 1976 evinrude 115. it has pilot controls shift and throttle together with warm up lever. when i have it disonnected from motor everything moves good. i hook up the cables to the motor and the gears inside the control box seem to skip and cant get back to nuetral or reverse. how do i adjust it so it doesnt happen.

you will need to take it apart, and see if the gears are broken.

i opened and the shift gear seems to come back when you pul back on lever. how much wear is acceptable on the shift lever assembly gear(cable side)
