1976 mercury 110 battery?

Hey Folks, I just got 1 1976 9.8hp mercury 110, when I took of the engine cowl I noticed that there was a (once was..) red wire wich was, on one end connected to the rectifier, and the other end was lose, I read that this was supposed to be charging the battery? and if so, where is the battery and how dos it look like?...

You would put a 12 volt garden tractor battery somewhere in the boat.------------Battery would not be fitted under the cowling !!

really? cool! so apart from that, the rectifier doesn't serve a real purpose?
