1974 Johnson 2hp recoil starter popping out

My 1974 Johnson 2hp recoil starter keeps popping out. I’ve done them before with no trouble but this one keeps coming out of the outer retainer. It’s almost like the gap is too big for the spring. Has anyone had this problem?

Post any pictures of this issue ?----Never heard of an issue with those starters.

This is where it keeps ending up. It slides off where it’s supposed to be then wraps around this post somehow

Simple----That spring has been damaged / modified.-----Buy a new / good used spring and issue will be resolved.
