1973 Johnson Prestolite tilt motor oil

I am rebuilding the single piston tilt motor on my ‘73 Johnson 60hp. Does anyone know what I should be using for an assembly and running oil? Thank you

Dextron atf fluid works.

I have heard of using the ATF, but didn’t know if that was the preferred choice?

My outboard is actually a 71es60, 1971 Johnson 60hp, but parts were ordered for this single ram prestolite tilt motor from marine engine.com as a 1973 because it supposedly didn’t exist then and could have been an add-on? Idk... I see now that ‘73 offered a 65hp, but not a 60hp. All I know is that it’s a single piston unit with a horizontal drive motor pointing towards starboard.

OK, if you want the "official" answer, the correct stuff was OMC Power Tilt and Trim Fluid, part #172913. Product went through several part number changes, and now is 0779481, available right here at Marineengine.
