1973 johnson power shift II water pump

Im trying to drop the lower unit to change the water pump tring to figure out how to get the shift linkage unhooked ??? Thanks for any pointers.

Its 135 hp the model #is 135esl73m

Remove the shift cable.

Remove the small 3/8" nut that is holding the two shift levers together.

Remove the large bolt that attaches the two levers to the front of the powerhead.

Slide the levers out of and away from the shift rod barrel. (That's it)

Be sure that, when installing, that the barrel is all the way down, then backed up just enough so that it faces properly.... AND MAKE SURE that the small nylon bushing in in the hole of that barrel. If the bushing is missing, it will be impossible to have the lower unit shift properly.

thanks for the info does the shift rod just snap into the barrel?

Just remove the pivot bolt ( 5/8 wrench ) and seperate the two arms.-----------Lower unit will now drop down.

The barrel screws onto the shift rod.

The shift levers...... the forward lever has a pin that slides thru the bushing hole of the barrel and into the rear lever.

Got the lower unit off now i need to now where the best place to order a waterpump I need the housing and all not just a rebuild kit ????
