1969 Mercury 9.8 Engine interchange to late 70's engine?

Looking at buying an early 80's late 70's Mercury 110 running engine and curious if it will interchange/bolt right in with my 1969 gear housing?

It will, but there are subtle differences, mainly in the throttle and shifter areas. Early motors used a screwy up for forward shift pattern (what were they thinking?) The throttle mechanism at the bottom differs on others (and is fragile so be careful). Finally, if the motor has the infamous Phase Maker ignition, steer clear of it! They're trouble and the stator is very expensive.

PS: The Phase Maker has external coils but NO sparkbox.
