I picked up a 1990 Yamaha 175hp and am trying to get her running again.
I’m new to outboards and kind of clueless. This motor was sitting on a pallet not rigged up. Had some loose wires at motor. I hooked the main black harness cable coming from ignition/control box to the motor. Hooked up power to neg of starter (at top) and positive to the starter solenoid. Turning ignition while in neutral and nothing happens. Trim motor not working at motor switch either.
there is a fuse holder that is missing its other half. When power is applied to fuse, pulling the switch at ign box causes an alarm to sound. I also connected a red wire to solenoid That was loose coming from black box next to starter.
I checked for corrosion inside ign box and it’s clean. There are a lot of wires coming off ign box that I assume go to the gauges.
Putting power on starter directly and it pops and turns flywheel 5 teeth or so.
I plan to replace starter solenoid soon.
I’d really appreciate any nuggets of wisdom.
