I am measuring the crankcase

I am measuring the crankcase seal rings for their proper thickness. The ring seems to be made of two materials; an outer steal like rim and the inner material. Do I measure just inside the outer ridge or the widest part?

The ring is one material. What you are looking at is worn out rings. If there is a step on the ring it is scrap ----period.

Thanks sparky. I was checking some others and saw that it was one material. Since this motor was suppose to have been rebuilt recently I am very suprised that the rings got that worn. Thanks again.

In short your motor was NOT rebuilt.A good shop would know that these seal rings are notorious for wear and would do something about it. Myself i spend time to chamfer the sharp edges on these rings so that they "move" as the crankshaft or block change dimension due to temperature changes.
