What is hole in the side of water pump base

Confused as to what the hole in the side of the base part of pump.

It goes into the high pressure side of the pump

1983 70hp mercury 3 cylinder

That should mate with the flush plug on outside of housing if equipped. I dont remember the 83 models with a flush plug, mainly the old small I2 and I4 motors. If it goes all the way thru its likely for a old 50hp. The correct one will have the hole but it will be blocked off.

Thanks for your post.

There is also a 1/16" hole on the end that goes into the high pressure side of the pump.

Trying to figure out how to get the right part. ???
