engine runs worse after six hundred dollars worth of repairs

Thanks in advance for any advice I get. Here's the situation, I've got a 2000 Yamaha 40 horse. Although this used engine started, idled, and ran great, it always seemed to bog at wide open throttle. I put it in the shop and told them to go through the carburetors check out the rest of the motor, compression timing etc. Compression checked out at 130 pounds across the board. After they went through the carbs they called and told me that number 1 cylinder was not working. It does not suck any air through the carburetor at all. They felt as though the bottom ring was stuck and said the top ring was for compression the bottom line was for suction. They sold me a big bottle of hogwash which brought the bill to $600. It still ran worse tha when I brought it in and they wanted to then split the case which would bring the bill up close to a million dollars (or so it seemed) . I just towed it home and I'm trying to fix it myself. I've asked all along if it could be reeds and was assured that it could not be. Any thoughts men?

Is there an oil sheen under the flywheel?

Go to the auto parts store and buy a compression guage. Do the checks yourself. It is BS that the top ring is any different to the bottom ring. If the cylinder has compression, then it is pulling a charge into the cylinder.

For a much better test...do a leakdown on the cylinders.

he said 130 PSI all accross. the middle ring is for holding oil to lubricate the cylinder. Your mechanic talking out of his azz. First let try to rule out bad gas first or water in gas. Borrow an external gas tank and put some fresh gas in and give that a try. If it still run poorly at wide open throttle I would think it's not getting enough gas at WOT. This means check your fuel pump diaphram. You can do this by yourself. Remove the fuel pump and open it up to check it out. Becareful when taking it apart and make sure you put everything back the way it supposed to be. Let try those things first and report your finding for now. Good luck

I have never heard such a buncha BS. A top ring builds compression and a bottom ring builds suction? GOOD LORD! Report them to the Better Business Bureau! You can't build compression without SUCTION in a 2 stroke. Period! In a little 2-stroke, talk to anyone who works on 2-stroke engines. I bet your problem is one of those little brass fuel jets in a carb is clogged or patially clogged. Take it to any guy who works on chainsaws, weed eaters, or any 2 cycle engine. He can pull that brass fuel jet in a few minutes, tell you if it is clogged, and clean it.
