1985? 170h. problems running ruff

Have a1985 170 h on 18.5 ft thompson runabout starts and runs good until i am cruising for 5 to 10 mins then loses power and will only idle or run at low rpms a boat savy friend said its the coil gone bad when it get hot, please help!!

What exactly does the engine do? Drop in RPM, won't excellerate? Does it stall? A coil shutting down from heat usually won't produce spark. Check the spark plugs to see how it is running...good combustion has brown spark plug electrodes. Bad gas will cause a loss in power.
 
It seems to lose power but only after cruising for couple miles and only sometimes it will run but hesitates and i have to run at lower rpms until i shutit down and fish for couple hours using electric motor then it runs great for a mile or two then same thin happens thats why i dont think its fuel or it would run crappy all the time
