Just repowered with a 2012 F250XA. Sweet! So the manual says to use ear muffs to flush the motor while running. The "garden hose fitting" is to be used to flush the power head while not running the motor because running the motor while utilizing the "garden hose fitting" this will cause damage to the water pump impeller. I slapped on the ear muffs and it seemed most of the water blew out arond the muffs, the pee hole did not flow any water and I just didn't feel good about the approved procedure. What is the consensus on using the "garden hose fitting" to flush, with the motor running, as opposed to using the ear muff method which did not seem to be working for me.

i have that same fitting that you call "garden hose fitting" although on a much smaller motor a 2012 Yamaha F15 4-stroke. i was told by the dealer that if you use that one to flush it bypasses the water pump, so it is recommended to use earmuffs. i therefore always use earmuffs or better on all my outboards. when i really want to do a thorough job (like when putting away for the season) i have a big tub that i slip underneath and fill with fresh clean water up to the cavitation plate or higher - that is the absolute best method unless you have a lake nearby.

Get a pair of round muffs and some duct tape. Install them, tape the edges and turn on the water. Then fire up the engine. It will take a minute for the water to fill the engine block and come out the pisser.
