Stringer 800 ?

I have a 1979 350 ci 260 hp. I had to change the Intermediate housing because the steering shaft was totally seized. I picked up a complete outdrive from a 1985 v6. and used that but the gear ratio is different. My question is, can I take the gears out of the upper on the old one and put them in the new one without any issues? Anyone know who can do this for me? I'm getting a little water inthe oil so I would like to do all the seals and change the ball gear and impeller . also the ball gear and seals in the intermediate. I can pull it out and ship it if I have to. Also approximate cost?

Why not just swap upper gearboxes? the gearing difference is all in the upper.
Or are you calling the upper gearbox the intermediate?

Intermediate is behind the engine in the hull. Upper is the top half of the outdrive, lower is the foot.

The old upper is corroded quite a bit. That link is a good site. I will look into it. Am I correct to say that the lowers are the same gear ratio?

Is there not a difference between hydro-mechanical and full mechanical shift between a '79 stringer 800 and an '85 stringer 800? My understanding is that there were some differences, although I do not know specifically what they were.

no hydraulic assist mechanism in the later ones -shifting all done by the cable

I'm not sure if any of the internal parts cross over between the two but you can check the parts pages here or at shop.evinrude.com and see.
