2008 3hp starts free wheeling after about 50%25 throtle

One of our dingies has a yamah

One of our dingies has a yamaha 3hp that has always run just fine until lately it has developed a rather frustrating habit. Up until about 50% power it runs perfectly then all of a sudden the engine starts to race and the prop gets no power until I lower the revs below about 50% where it continues on its merry way. Anyone have a clue what could cause this and what I can do to cure it?

"Sounds like a spun prop, the rubber inside the prop hub has failed, you can get it repaired at a prop repair shop, but for a 3HP probably just get a new prop. Good Luck!"

Thanks will have a look at the prop. At least I now know to look at the rubber in the prop. There are no clear signs of damage to it but one never knows. I doubt that where we are now there will be a " Local Prop Shop" so may have to figure out a method of super glue or what ever until we get back to a place that has all these things.

"most,are diff to tell if damaged....the normal test,is to mark both hub,..and prop,test run,..if not lined up,...bad hub....and i would just get a new one for that size eng....super glue,... aint gonna wk..."

"Well the rubber bushing was sheared. Pretty easy to tell in this case. After taking off the hub nut I put a small screwdriver into the split pin hole and could turn the prop while the screwdriver stayed in place. So having no choice but to "get on with it" I pressed out the whole rubber & spline then super glued the rubber back together, fit the spline back in just enough that I could still get the rubber back in and slowly with a lot of working around the sides managed to get the lot back in with a "G" clamp press. OK it is not the beauty of the world, but is working again. Once we get back to a place where I can get parts I shall try to get a new bushing. Most of the places where we go labor is much cheaper than spare parts - in most cases."
