doing a couple of trips where i will be far from fuel supplies. probably 6-8 hours at constant speed ( my max speed is 5 and a bit knots). i have done lot longer days but been a mixture of fast/slow/ anchor which is no help calculating fuel use---thanks regards from uk

"At wide open throttle you should burn about 1.5 US/Gal per hour (5.8 litres per hour).

You can cut that in half by running at the engines "cruise speed".

The easiest way to determine where that is, is to remove the engine cover (hood) and observe the timing linkage.

As you advance the throttle the trigger will advance until you get somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4 throttle, then even if you continue to advance the throttle, there is no further advancement of the timing.

That is the point of "max timing advance" where you still have some throttle left.

At that throttle position you generally burn about half as much fuel as wide open.

The resultant speed is called "cruise speed" which is often 60-70% of max speed - so a little slower, but double the "gas mileage"."

thanks for reply graham and technical advice. i am planning a trip to scotland this summer. its a very sparcely populated part of britain and fuel sources are few and far between. i will be landing and camping in some uninhabited spots so getting the fuel right is essential. cost also comes into it petrol/gas is roughly 1 dollar and 70c a here litre --regards from uk
