The trim sending unit is very

The trim sending unit is very stiff with no spring action. Is this a simple replacement? Wires go into the motor housing and disappear how do I trace them back out. I also replaced the Tach and it still does not work. What could be wrong. Can the RPM reading be checked with a 12volt tachometer used on cars? Are these two tasks simple enough for a novice or should I seek a professional boat mechnic.

Your rectifier/regulator has probably failed. You will probably find it is not charging either. The tach not registering is one of the symptoms of a failed rect/reg. Exact same thing happened on my 1986 Johnson 225. Part is not hard to change out. Part costs $230. Good Luck David B

I gave up on the task and took it to a boat mechanic. Should have it back Wed 21st. The trim sending unit is $80. RPM problem not known yet.
