" I presently have a 34' with twin 1986 Crusader 454's with transmissions of 1.52.1, inline, a friend just offered his newer transmissions he has /as he just repowered with diesel, they are 10-18-012 / 2.91.1 inline. My question - is there any real advantage in going to a ratio of 2.91.1 besides more torque.. and can they be installed with out any changes in mounting. Thanx's in advance "

"Can't tell you about mounting differences, but that's a pretty drastic change in ratio - almost double. This would mean big changes in prop size or accepting a much reduced top speed and risk of over-revving the engines. If your current gears and props put your engines in the proper top RPM range (say 4400-4800), I'd pass on the newer units unless you plan to tow barges! ;^)
