We have a Volvo 2003 marine di

We have a Volvo 2003 marine diesel engine on our bpat.

When motoring we occasionally experience a sudden decrease in revs. Either we adjust the throttle lever or it comes back by itself. This is not due to rough seas when we normally have enough wind to sail but in smooth or slight seas.

There seems to be no slack in the throttle control wires. We did have some difficulty in pumping fuel through after changing primary and secondary fuel filters and the engine would not start immediately but did so later. An engineer says that the fuel lift pump is OK.

Any suggestions?

Would that be the case when the engine runs smoothly for much of the time with only occasional hiccups? Two days ago we motored for 8 miles (~ 80 minutes) when the engine faltered then was O for the next 18 miles.

Would I see leaks of fuel?

"It is probably building up air bubles (vacum) and most likely no visible leaks. Check that all old gaskets were removed BEFORE installing new filters, and that the filters have not been overtigthened. (only hand tightend!)I would guess running at high load will shorten the 'hick-up' intervalls, and reducing throtle might bring it back to life again, encrease and it might die out completely.
You might disconnect the return line and let it run into a cannister and monitor. Air bubles is a bad sign, if fuel return diappears, You have a blockage somewhere."
