We bought an 1987 searay and just rebuilt the engine and we got everything back together and went to start it and it would only start for a second and if you held the key and then shut right off. It started like three times but none of the gauges were working so we shut it off again and it went back to starting and shuting off again can anyone help PLEASE!!!! Thank you

Recheck your wiring per manual

Recheck your wiring per manual. If it has points ign. it may need a ballast resistor if the resitance wire is missing to the coil. Look at the wiring diagram. Check your coil primary voltage with the key in the start position and the run position.

"Hello again everyone, so the boat starts after replacing the condenser and the ignition and taking the wiring harness off and cleaning it but the gauges are still not working there is power and ground to all of them and we checked the wiring diagram and that is all correct but we start the motor and nothing on any gauge but the volt we also jumped the gauges like the manual said and that also did not work any ideas??? Thanks a Ton"

"What engine do you have? What gauges do you have and which ones do not work?

When you rebuilt the engine, did you use any sealant on the sender threads? If yes, remove the sealant; their threads must be grounded to the engine. Was there paint in the holes the senders mount in? Clean it out.

Did someone disconnect a dash plug under the gauge panel?

The temp and oil pressure gauges can be tested by grounding the wire connected to the sender. The gauge needle should peg to the other side of the dial. If they do move, the connection at the sender is poor or both senders are defective.

If they are double nut senders, remove the nuts and polish them and the stud until shiney and reinstall the bottom nut tightly. Install the cleaned wire terminal and then the next nut w/lock washer. Hold the bottom nut in place with a wrench and tighten the top nut."
