"I have been living on borrowed time, running an old steel houseboat on the Missouri River with a shift cable that has finially broke off all of the threads at the control end. Am looking for a new cable, needs to be 34 or 36 feet.

My question, is does this need to be specifically Volvo Penta? I have found "universal" cables, but am concerned about that little plate that secures the cable as it comes through the unit. This web site has cables for OMC, Mercruiser, and something called Red Jacket (standard.

"yes they can be used. I was gonna buy a red jacket, but I found that the volvo replacement was cheaper.
It's a simple cable........ There are many aftermarket cables, you just have to search for the one that fits your budget.
