"I need some advice here. I have replaced every seal on my 280 sterndrive. However, I am still getting water in my oil. I just so happened to check the U-joint bellow, and it had a bunch of oil in it. I replaced the seal in there about a month ago. I also replaced the shifter seal a few weeks ago. I am at a loss as to what is going on here. I am guessing that the oil is getting past the drive shaft seal and leaking into the u-joint bellow. But where is the water coming from? Should I just give up and take my drive to the local dealer for service?"

"Bob, there are a number of ways water can get into the outdrive:

Now you have some homework to do. You can either start an elimination process (pressure test the unit if necessary) or you can just reseal the whole unit.

Here is a complete seal kit:

There are also smaller kits available for individual areas. To see what's available from Sierra, click on the "engine parts" icon, click on Volvo (menu at the left of the screen), click on drive, then click on seal kits."

I have replaced all of the sea

I have replaced all of the seals except 38 and 39 in the lower unit. What about the oil leaking into the u-joint bellow?

"Oil is likely going into the

"Oil is likely going into the drive bellows through seal 21. That seal could be faulty, or the surface in the yoke 28 could be scored, which would prevent the seal from doing its job.

It is not uncommon to see faulty seals 38, usually damaged by fishing line. If those seals are faulty and allow water ingress, the water head pressure will make the leak through seal 21 into the drive bellows worse."

"If you didn't replsce the

"If you didn't replsce the head washer along with the blueseal in the upper, that is your problem with the oil in the bellows. There has been some instanteces(sp) where the oil will leak past the seal when tilted up over a period of time."

"Boat Doc, using the diagrams provided by the fisherman, could you please indicate the numbers of the parts that you are referring to?"
