Noticed an intermittent "klunk" coming from the outdrive. Not a loud one, but obvious. Took her to a seasoned mechanic with 40 yrs experience and he replaced the gimball bearing, a shaft/sleeve, checked the dif. & reverse gears - ok and almost $500 later - 6 weeks later and took her out and still the same klunk. I found the Hastings site - threw that at the mechanic and replaced the shift cable. Finally, July 28th, took it out for a spin and it ran perfectly, we really thought we kicked this klunk. On the 2nd trip out - as soon as we hit the throttle leaving the marina - "klunk". We were hoping that perhaps it is just settling in the water... It did this twice and both times during acceleration, once under load pulling a tube. Is this something serious, or is this just going to be something expected for a 20 year old boat? Maybe the shift cable needs adjustment - we don't know. We have ran out of options - any thoughts or personal experience?"

"It sounds like a typically case of worn out clutch dog and forward gear luggs. Dog and forward gear set (gear and pinion) have to be changed.
To 'avoid' similar problem in the future, shift 'hard'. Move the lever with determination so only one 'bang' is heard, not 'ratatatata -bang'.
There once was a rebuild kit Reverse-forward-pinion that in fact was priced lower than the normal part: forward-pinion. Check with Your dealer if he has the old service bulletin with the numbers on. May have to go back to 87-88."

"Hey Morten, thanks for the thoughts. We are new boaters and still learning more about this boat and shifting has always been hard even after the cable was changed. But, it makes one slight bang - more like one knock/hesitation - never a ratatatt-bang, which is probably good. It feels almost like we get caught on something ever so briefly and then releases. Again, we have taken the boat out 3 times since the last bill and it's knocked about 3 times - otherwise she runs great."
