"just bought my first boat, and don't know if there is supposed to be an air filter on the carb or not. it looks as if something screws onto the carb. boat runs good but i think it should have more power, any suggestions?"

"Ken, outboards usually don't have an air filter. Some may have a "carb cover", more or less a plastic shield, and a few models have a mesh screen (I imagine the idea was to keep flies, larger dust particles out - but in general, no.

I have 4 outboards, my three Merc's are wide open in front of the carbs and my Evinrude has a cover. But no filters..."
