So just learing the propoer me

So just learing the propoer method for engine timing. Checked both engines this weekend and Starboard is at 9-10 and Port at 12-13. The manula says ten but someone mentioned at least 10 is best.

What is the right setting? Also the star engine timing mark reads from 0-16 and the port from neg 4-12. Why are they different?

Also what about advanced timing?

Thanks

"I would put them both at 10.

"I would put them both at 10. By advancing further you may pick up a hundred RPMs or so at WOT, but you are also effecting the base timing. This will effect the idle and also the emissions output.

Regarding the timing marks, the timing cover was obviously changed at some time, either due to an engine change or just a tin change. The marks are irrelevant, the important thing is the setting.

If you have a concern as to the accuracy of the marks, you can bring #1 piston to TDC and remark the indicator at "0", then using an adjustable advance timing light, set on "10", reset the timing.
