"After sitting in my garage for the better part of 10 years, I decided to use my 1974 Mercury 40 4HP outboard. The engine started up on the second pull and runs strong. But, 10 years killed the water pump. How hard is it to replace the water pump in this engine? Is it something I can tackle without the service manual?"
 
Yes you can. Just remove the n

Yes you can. Just remove the nut in front of the lower unit and the nut at the water intake screen.The lower unit will pull of and the pump is right there.To reassemble make sure you have lower in nuetral and shift in nuetral.Test shift function before installing the nuts.
