"Today when I was out in the boat the tachometer, which normally registers about 2800 rpms at 24 mph was up at about 4000rpms. When I shut off the engine the tachometer didn't go all the way down to zero, but remained at about 500 rpms. The engine never seemed to run any differently. Could this be a faulty gauge? The engine is a six cylinder Merc Cruiser.
