"Hi I'm new to boating and so I do need some advice. I have bought an Sunbird Cuddy 5.6 metre boat but I need an Auxiliary outboard in case of a breakdown to the main engine. It has a fixed support on the rear platform to take one but I dont know if I need a Long Shaft or Short Shaft can you help, thanks"

"Keith, to figure that you just have to measure from the top of the support (where the motor bracket would clamp on) down to the lower edge of the hull.

If you are measuring about 16" a short shaft will do, about 21" a long shaft and at 26" it would be an extra long shaft (also referred to as "sail" length in some circles)...

All measurements +/- an inch or so..."
