"where is the fuel pump and fuel filter on a merc 5.0 alpha 1 sterndrive engine. Got this new engine in 2002. Starts up great, but once you give it a little acceleration, it stalls right out. What could be the problem???"

The fuel pump and filter on most V-8 EFI's is right down in front on the starboard side. Usually right under the alternator, if it's serpentine belt driven.
Look for the fuel line from the tank going to the engine. The pump will be right there and it will be electric, about 1.5 inch diameter by about 6 inches long. Two wires to it. The water separating filter is a white canister mounted just below the pump. Looks like an oil filter.
