I am looking to buy merc 125-

I am looking to buy merc 125-hp 1968.
It has being parked for almost a year.
I am assured it is in good condition.
What should i do to check motor before i buy.
If in good condition What would be reasonable price to pay?
Would like several opinions on this motors.

check compression (they s

check compression (they should be even) and replace the water pump impeller if you buy the motor.You replacee the impeller because the motor does not have an overheat warning system.

Every little bit of advise helps.
I don't know much about outboard engines.
If there was a book that would teach me step by step I would just learn and maintain my own motor.But someone told me about clymers books,I bought one but it is simply to vague to follow.
I hold YOU in high regard and respect your words.
my johnson 140 developed a knock and it cost too much to rebulid. bring retired and on fixed income this 1968 is all I can afford!

" Be aware that MERCURY motors did not use stainless shafts untill the late 70's ( OMC has been stainless since at least 1950), so a cosmetic gem might still be a headache.Your best bet might be to find a used powerhead or a good shop to repair the 140 OMC "
