I am in the process of purchas

I am in the process of purchasing a 1989 38' Hatteras with Detroits JT-6-71-TIB. the engines have 1400 hours and is the original engine (not rebuilt) The engine surveyor mentioned that I should check the availability of parts from Johnson Towers and how easy are the to get. This is my first time owning a diesel. Can any one provide me with information about these engines?

Thanks

"J&T's 671 are work ho

"J&T's 671 are work horses but are getting outdated. If you don't mind a little smoke, hard to cold start and a oily engine room they are fine. Parts are relatively easy to get. Watch out for counter rotating engines, newer trannys won't work with them. Watch out for cheap injectors...if they are 75$ each pass them up, buy the good ones @150$ each. Also after amrket cylinder kits are a crap shoot whether they will fit right or not! PS mine run fine."
