Just had one transmission fail

Just had one transmission fail on me and had it replaced yesterday.Mechanic amazed totally worn out. nothing salvageable. Boat got 40yrs use out of it. Fluid in the port trans looks dirty. What Tranny fluid do these trannys take??? Still new to this.Mechanic recomends Chevron ATF.

"Your mechanic is correct. Be sure to check the level HOT, after the engine has JUST been shut off. That's the correct 'full' indication. When cold, the fluid should be WAY above the 'full' mark.

Warning to all inboard tranny owners: These things have only TWO QUARTS of fluid in them! (A typical car or truck has 5 times more.) If they get only a cup low they can slip, and if they slip they will burn out! So keep them full; and use only the above, factoy recommended checking method."
