Smoking on startup

My Merc 225 carbureted blows a

My Merc 225 carbureted blows a lot of smoke every time I start it. This happens weather it is hot or cold then clears up after a minute or so. Is this normal?

"That depends - if it's a 4 stroke you definately have an issue. Most 2 strokes will initially smoke a bit of oil on start-up (particularly cold) and will blow smoke to varying degrees depending on gas/oil mixture until they get up to operating temp. I tend to mix a little heavy, so get a bit more smoke.."

"I use only Mercury Quicksilver premium TC-W3 oil.
The Carbs and fuel pump were recently rebuilt. The engine runs fine idleing, accelerating, cruising etc. .
I recently bought this boat & motor and the previous owner said that it always smoked a lot on startup."
