The motor does shift in and ou

The motor does shift in and out of gear properly but if I move the shifter lever slightly forward or backward without engaging all the way I hear a pinging sound like the gears aren't meshing correctly. Does this mean something is out ot sync?

Simply put you must "slam" an outboard into gear.That may be an overstatement but " granny shifting " is a NO-NO.Easing a motor into gear does all the damage!

Thanks. that's what a friend of mine here at work said also. The reason I noticed is that my brand new E-tec doesn't make a sound.
