I have a inboard with thru transom exhaust. While underway the exhaust comes forward swamping me and the passengers with fumes. Any ideas?

" Wally, this is known as the station wagon effect.
Meaning the draft created from your transom causes the air behind your boat to pull back to it. Does this smell of fumes happen at low speeds, cruise speed or always? If you have open exhaust ports you can try using rubber flaps on the ends. "

it happens at slower speeds of 12 to 18mph. I do have flaps on the exhuast to prevent water from backing into the engine. Is this what you are talking about?

"This is pretty common with inboards that have a fairly high winshield or cabin, which creates a low pressure area in the cockpit when underway. If you can open a hatch, side window or windshield vent it will help flush the air out to the stern.

Otherwise, change speeds, change direction, or put your face(s) in the wind. (I'm not being funny here....my dad and I had to keep our heads above the windshield in our old Century Raven until we cleared the marina.)
