"1980 Merc 305 model 898. Engine over heating, finally found ruptured intake water hose broken inside bell housing. I have taken off lower unit and bell housing, hopefully do not have to take off gimble. Might as well replace three bellows also while replacing water hose. First boat, first engine. Any help would be appreciated."

"Jeff, if you are in that deep

"Jeff, if you are in that deep, definitly replace the works.
You should also take the oportunity to check your trim and limit switches and all your pivot pins and bearings ect while you are there.
If you havent already got a manual, pick yourself up one and it will describe the correct procedure to fit your new bellows and it will recomend that you use bellows adheasive when fitting up the new bellows, make sure you adhear to that advice.
Make sure you check your gimble bearing while you are there and if you have any doubts at all about the integrity of the bearing, then replace it as well.
It can pay dividends just to check the alignment of the gimble bearing even if you do not replace the bearing in case of a miss aligned engine/drive caused through such problems as a colapsed engine mount.
If you replace the bearing be sure to align the bearing properly using a line up tool before trying to install the drive unit back onto the bellhousing.
When positioning the band clamps that secure the bellows make sure you fit them in the positions that are described in the manuals so that they can be secured properly when you assemble the bellhousing back into the gimble ring.
Since it is your first time, take your time and double check everything you do, always remember that the correct fitting of the bellows will keep the water out of the boat and away from harming your universal joints, gimble bearing and other critical components.
Hope that helps a bit and hasnt scared you off having a go.
Cheers
Peter C"
