"If it is hot out, or if it has run for a while, when I switch the key off or hit the kill switch, which are both mounted on the binnacle, the motor will keep running. I have to pull the gas line out of the tank and run it dry to get the motor to stop. Help me figure this out."

It would help to know what motor you have. Most merc have a black/yellow wire running from the switchbox to the kill switch and to the ignition switch. The motor is shut off by grounding this wire.
