I am trying to find out the firing order for a 1983 VOLVO PENTRA 4 Cyl.

Thank for the info on the firing order. Not being the sharpest tool in the shed I did mark anything when I took the wires off, is there a diagram anywhere of the rotor cap or can you tell me what to do."

1) Remove #1 spark plug and turn the engine clockwise with a socket wrench attached to the bolt in the crankshaft pulley until you reach the end of the compression stroke (you can feel it by plugging the spark plug hole with your thumb). Then, remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing at: this should be where #1 ignition wire goes in the distributor cap. Afterwards, install the rest of the wires in the distributor in the firing order, clockwise.
