" I have 1990 90hp Tohatsu motor that red lines at 5600, last time out I could only get 5100 but I seem to be going the same speed as before. Any ideas what might cause this.

" Bob... I have no idea why you would loose 500 rpm (trouble shoot rpm, spark, carbs).

Speed.... Various hulls will move at a set top speed regardless of the hp or rpm (hull resistance). That is the purpose of combining a speedometer with a tachometer.

If the boat is traveling at say 65 mph at 5000 rpm, and still traveling 65mph at 5500 rpm, the engine would be wasting fuel at any rpm over 5000.

This may or may not not pertain to your rig but it is one explanation.
