Prop locked will not turn in neutral

Mercury 50hp 1979 engine Troub

Mercury 50hp 1979 engine Trouble with prop seems to be locked even when in neutral and there is some oil leaking from lower unit. Engine was working perfect until the engine had good soaking of sea water waves breaking over top of engine. now she will not fire up starter is working fine.First boat so any info or help appreciated. Gordon
 
if it won't go in neutral

if it won't go in neutral remove the lower unit and then try to start engine. check for spark at plugs with timing light as you crank engine

"You might want to take a look at the shift shaft and see if it has rusted in half. They ususall break coming outof forward to neutral. Happens alot on older mercs, especially when salt water is involved."
