" My battery blew up while charging it during the winter months and now does not charge, the motor runs off the battery, but will not charge, is this a diode/regulator problem or a stator problem and how do I go about checking this, it is a 1978/150hp/1500 mercury outboard thanks. "

Generally its the fault of the regulater/rectifier.

To test...check for continuity between + to -you should only have continuity ONE way.

If continuity is both ways or NOT at all the rectifier should be replaced.

For the stator...check for continuity between the 2 yellows..if none exists...change out the stator.
