"I have a merc 25hp and tell tale is very very hot. I put in a new water pump & new thermostat. (motor only 2 years old) Still really hot water coming out of tell tale (160 degrees measured with kitchen thermometer) A buddy of mine used a head gun while we water tested motor at 3/4 throttle and areas around cylinder heads & exhaust cover seemed normal (no higher than 150 degrees) However, we noticed the top area of block directly behind & underneight of flywheel measured 200 degrees ! Is this normal ? Does water pass in this area ? Does this sound like I may have a problem ? I would appreciate some expert advice as I am stumped & nervous about using the motor."

"Mike,

That sounds too hot

"Mike,

That sounds too hot to me. You may have an obstruction somewhere in the cooling system, a leaky gasket in the exhaust, maybe a burnt gasket at the base of the block.

Tony"

thanks for the advice. I guess that I'm going to have to have it checked out. Not happy though since motor is only 2 yrs old with little use
