" Black smoke is sign of too much fuel being delivered at that RPM. Clogged fuel filters will cause a reduction in Max RPM but NOT black smoke. If Max RPM is reached before full throttle is attained, then look at things such as hull contion and propeller, and a change in hull weight and distribution (ie. a new dingy on transom, more gear in stern of boat, new anchor and chain.) Fuel timing will not change unless work has been performed to the injection pump. A clogged air filter will also reduce RPM and create smoke, carbon build up on the Turbo Blades can cause a reduction in boost, have a skilled mechanic decarbon if necessary. Turbo boost is RPM related so low boost at low RPM is not unusual. Look for simple solutions, this engine is not powerful so any extra loads or restrictions can cause this rpm drop and black smoke. "
