" I have a 74 model mercury 115 in line 6 #3946662, Iam looking at a replacement lower unit,
1) 85 hp #4153911 mercury

2) 80's model 80 hp #5002209 mariner

both are apperantly off in line 6 engines, but I dont know if they are or if the major hp difference would be a prob. "

"different gear ratios,i believe the 80 hp(4 cyl) are 2.3:1 as opposed to 2:1 for inline sixes.the ratio will cause your inline six rpms to scream over the red line(not good)you probably can make up the difference by increasing the pitch on your prop,though you really should get the right 2:1 unit in my experience.i have a few [email protected]"
